1Install Claude Desktop: open claude.ai/download, download for Mac or Windows, install, and sign in.

2Find the document you want summarized on your computer. PDFs, Word files, and exported Google Docs all work.

3Open a new chat in Claude Desktop.

4Drag the file into the chat window — OR copy the text from the document and paste it into the chat.

5Click Copy prompt on this page, paste it below your file (or above your pasted text), and press Enter.

6Read the summary. If it missed something important, reply: "Also cover the section about [topic]" or "Make it shorter."

7Copy the summary into email, Slack, Notion, or your notes — wherever your team needs it.

8Next document: drag a new file in and run the same prompt again (~1 minute).

Troubleshooting

Claude says the file is too large

Cause

Very long PDFs or reports may exceed upload limits.

Solution

Paste only the most important sections, or split the doc into parts and summarize each part separately. Say "Part 1 of 3" in the prompt.

The summary missed the main point

Cause

The document may be dense or the prompt needs a focus area.

Solution

Reply: "Focus on financial results only" or "What are the action items for the marketing team?"

I can't drag a file into Claude

Cause

You may be using claude.ai in a browser with limited file support.

Solution

Use Claude Desktop from claude.ai/download. Or copy-paste the text from your document into the chat.

I'm worried about sharing confidential content

Cause

Sensitive documents should follow your company data policy.

Solution
